After a great time in Portugal recently, the Reef Free Tour  finally returned to the South West of France toward the end of last week. The timing was perfect.  Saturday 22nd of August the Reef Free Tour van was spied at a secret surf spot near Bordeaux, that only breaks a few times per year as a result of king tides.  Reef team and events manager Manu Portet was on it and reported a glassy two foot “swell” with a  only handful of crew present to enjoy the session.  Manu told us that the ride was one of the longest of his life and he surfed for just over seven minutes. Yeh baby…Special thanks to Greg Rabejac for the awesome photo.

Swell predictions are looking really good this week with pumping waves expected in the 4 – 6ft range starting today until the end of this coming weekend. The Reef team including Tim Boal, Arthur Bourbon and Kepa Acero, will be in the thick of it, frothing to find the best waves on the coast from Lafitenia to Casernes and beyond.  Keep your eyes open for the Reef Free Tour van and be sure to come and say hello if you see us – you may just score yourself a pair of limited edition Mick Fanning signature series sandals, a tshirt, pair of boardies or one of loads of other giveaways.

With only three weeks remaining before the finalists shall be chosen to have a chance at winning the VW California van used this summer on the Reef Free Tour, it’s now or never to upload your video entries on  our event website http://freetour.europe.reef.com depicting what being free represents to you  Let Reef offer you the chance to be FREE. Reef Free Tour – Portugal

August 12th

Last Wednesday, after a long drive south from France, the Reef Free Tour arrived in Portugal at the legendary surf destination of Ericeira. The crew onboard for this leg of the journey consisted of Reef surfers Kepa Acero (Basque Country), Jon Gonzalez (Canary Islands), Thomas Lafonta (France) and Eduardo “Queso” Quintana (Spain).  Despite the tiny conditions upon our arrival, we decided to wash off the dust with a quick surf before being joined by the Reef Portugal surf team including Paulo Do Bairro, Nuno Matta, Carolina Guerreiro, Patricia Lopes and Joana Andrade.  Joanna took us  for dinner @ the Dolphin Marisqueria…superb, before driving us to Casa do Paco d’Ilhas, a fantastic place to stay and breakfast here each morning was simply amazing.

August 13th

In the morning we met up with the national surf team at a vantage point between Piedra Blanca and Ribeira d’Ilhas, to check the swell. The waves were small so we headed north to Sao Lourenzo beach for a surf together.  The weather was not great with plenty of early morning fog, but fortunately it lifted by the afternoon enabling us to shoot some surf action.  After a surf, the troops headed to the best Pizzeria in Portugal at the Ribeira d’Ilhas surf camp. With bellies full, we headed back to our accommodation to clown around in the pool where Thomas LaFonta put on a display of aerial acrobatics. At 5.30pm we visited a store called XXS in the city centre of Ericeira before picking up Jonny G from Lisbon airport @ 8pm. From here we returned to Ribeira d’Ilhas surf camp  to organize the first Reef Free Tour party complete with BBQ, DJ, giveaways etc – all of the Portugese surf industry were present and got into the groove rocking the night away!

August 14th

After leaving our dream accommodation we drove to Costa de Caparica to stay in the leisure centre S.Joao. On the journey, we went to Praia Grande where our friend “Pecas” was waiting for us with his students at the surf school.  After a quick autograph session,  we surfed together in small foggy conditions.  Despite poor visibility and Thomas alost taking out a grom with one of his airs, everybody came in from the surf with a smile on their face.  We drove the length of the coast to Caparica before another retail visit at the Samadi Caparica Surf Centre.  After some photo opportunities, poster signing, and giveaways, we dropped Jonny G at the airport before dinner in Rodizio.  Brasilian food with music and ambience to match, nice. From here we hit the The Wave, for a quick drink at this popular  beachside bar, before arriving at the offical Free Tour party in the Waikiki Summer bar. Miss Reef girls were standing at the door offering stickers and other giveaways to party goers. The festivities reached a climax in the early hours of the morning when tshirts, sandals and other giveaways were being flung into the crowd on the dance floor – amazing to see what some people (particularly girls) will do for a tshirt @ 2am in the morning

August 15th

With heavy heads we filmed some interviews with all of the team.  Interviews complete, we went to ride mini motor bikes in a park where Nuno Matta showed us how to fly / ride this type of vehicle simultaneously.  After a great day, we were sorry to think that tomorrow we must head north to our next destination on the Free Tour.  On our last night in Portugal, we slept at Joanna’s house just in front of Coxos. We hoped we’d wake up to a quick session at the famous right hand point break before hitting the road, but apparently Huey (God of Swell) did not heard our prayers the night before….  A huge thanks to the entire Reef team in Portugal for making us feel so welcome, the fantastic organization and all your support – you guys rock!

We drove tall day from Coxos to Ribadeo in Galicia to meet our friend David from Hola Ola.  We pulled in around 8pm and wasted no time going to dinner before crashing out early.

The better part of the day was spent visiting stores and taking photos with the van. At 2.30pm we met up at the harbour with Reef Wake team riders Enric Dosta , Jamie Oliver and Reef Team/Events Manager Manu Portet. The riders were amped and wasted no time mixing it up showing just what they can do with a boat, a piece of rope and a small board strapped to their feet.  The crowd were blown away enjying every minute of this expression session.  With two support boats close by, we filmed all the action and you’ll find it on the event site very soon.  Once Jaime and Enric finished their session, Kepa and Thomas enjoyed a wake surf and we finished the day with a BBQ close to the famous Cathedral Beach.

After a slow start to the morning, we dropped in to Hola Ola Surf School to sign a few posters, shake a few hands and give aways some more product to the Spanish groms before the long drive home. Big thanks to Hola Ola for taking such great care of us, we had a blast!

Keep your eyes open for the Reef Free Tour van, as it may just be in a town near you very soon. Next stop, a little known surf destination in Bordeaux this weekend (yes you read it correctly) that only works a few times a year. Can you find us???

Well it took a while to get moving, but the entries are really starting to pour in. The competition is definitely hotting up to win the VW California Beach Van that’s being  used all this summer in the Reef Free Tour.  Since last Friday, an additional seven or eight videos have been uploaded onto the Reef Free Tour event website.  We’ve received entries from all over Europe including Spanish skateboarding speed freaks, Irish surfers being chased by mad cows, a French grom who’s school has been closed indefinitely enabling him to surf / skate all day long and lot’s more. The latest addition to be uploaded only this morning, “Land of the Free”, is undoubtedly one of the most interesting videos to date. It’s features an eclectic mix of answers from a diverse group of people in California expressing what being FREE means to them, as well as a healthy dose of high level surf action – be sure to check it out!

A crowd swarms around the Reef tent, looking for Rob Machado…

Last week, the Reef FREE Tour  spent the better part of the week (6th – 9th)  in Newquay England for the Relentless Boardmasters in association with Vans. For those of you who have never been to this event, it was truly an amazing experience. Hundreds of thousands of people enjoying the English summer and getting amongst everything that the event had too offer.

Thursday 6th of August was a superb day, near cloudless skies and a 4 – 5ft swell  that was ideal for the 5 star WQS surfing event.  Local hero and longtime sponsored Reef surfer Russell Winter was mixinig it up with the best of them and easily won his heats to advance into the 1/8 finals.  Regrettably, the following morning Russ failed to find a second decent scoring wave and was taken out by Micro Hall who advanced through  to the semi’s. Top honours eventually going to young Australian Daniel Ross late Friday afternoon and Basque surfer Txaber Trajaola in second.  Congrats to both of them.

With the surf contest wrapped up, all eyes were fixed on the action coming from the skateboarding vert ramp and the bmx mini ramp over the weekend.  Both of these events were a pleasure to watch with the boys throwing down some seriously BIG tricks. It was a tough crowd and as is often the case, the bigger the spills, the louder the applause.

FREE … to get sideways (bmx action on the mini ramp)

FREE … to get sideways (bmx action on the mini ramp)

The Vert ramp is always a crowd pleaser and the boys didn’t fail to impress. The contest featured a bunch of Europe’s finest as well as a couple of riders from the USA. Young American skating sensation Alex Perelson, was a step ahead of the pack displaying a larger repertoire of technical tricks and boosting bigger airs,  with  a style that was smoother than the pubic hair of an Asian hooker. Unsurprisingly, Alex took first place but worthy of a special mention was 14 y.o local Cornish lad Sam Bosworth, who narrowly missed a place on the podium, but looks set to have a big career ahead of him.

Winners aren’t always grinners – bet he’s dancing on the inside though!

Winners aren’t always grinners – bet he’s dancing on the inside though!

The fun didn’t stop there.  Certain lucky young men had the chance to flick “hot mud” all over the lovely Lynx ladies in the mud wrestling event which seemed to keep the beachside crowd amused. Surfers Against Sewage kindly proposed to let Reef participate in their beach clean up activities  and everybody who filled a rubbish bag received a gift from Reef – sandals, boardshorts, T’s, cap etc . It was great to see so many people willing to help clean up everyday and clearly concerned by environmental issues that affect us all.

FREE…to be part of the solution!

FREE…to be part of the solution!

The music festival throughout the duration of the event was another huge success.  The highlight undoubtedly being Cypress Hill who played in front of 20,000 people at Watergate Bay on Saturday evening, rocking out the crowd until midnight.

All in all, it was a fantastic event that really captured the spirit of the FREE Tour.  Sunday night rolled around all too quickly and before we knew it, it was time to hit the road to Plymouth, put the van on the ferry to Roscoff and prepare the next leg of the adventure.

The Reef FREE Tour will be in Portugal (Ericeira) starting tomorrow from the 13th – 16th of August. If you see the van, be sure to go up and say hi and you might just score yourself some Reef goodies, meet a famous surfer or be invited to a beachside BBQ.

Since last week, five or six new videos have been uploaded on the event  site. Check out  “A Surf Travel Documentary” – a very smooth piece of work. “Bodyboardogging” is well worth a laugh and “Being Free” is another new entry that’s rapidly gaining momentum and looking like a solid threat to be one of the three videos in the final.  There is still plenty of time for you to post your videos on  our event website http://freetour.europe.reef.com depicting what being free represents to you.  Be in the running to win the Reef FREE Tour van (Volkswagen California Beach) at the end of this summer and let Reef offer you the chance to be FREE. The smiling face says it all…another stoked grom on the Reef Free Tour

The smiling face says it all…another stoked grom on the Reef Free Tour

During the third week of July, the Reef Free Tour continued it’s passage through France and the event organizers had only  one objective in mind – “we’re free to do what we want when we want…”

Monday 13th July
The  Reef Free Tour  crew led by Manu Portet  along with French surfers Arthur Bourbon and Thomas Lafonta stopped at Le Spot Surf Shop in St Palais (near Royan) to pick up five surf stoked grommets, along with Llionel the manager of the shop.  The team were quick to hit the beach and on arrival were greeted by perfect two to three feet waves. After sharing  a great surf session together, the kids were treated to a private autograph signing session , received loads of giveaways and all in all had a great day.

Tuesday 14th July
Next  stop was the surf school Kabana on the Grand Village beach at  Ile d’Oleron.  Unfortunately the weather was not really on our side with heavy rain prevailing and and onshore wind wasn’t doing much to make the three to four feet waves look particularly inviting. Despite the poor conditions, Arthur Bourbon and Thomas Lafonta had a surf and the local surfers were stoked to watch them blowing up.  The day was finished with a visit to Tamarindo Surf Shop and a “mini” autograph session.

Thomas takes control of the tongs at Montalivet Surf Club

Wednesday 15th July
The BCA Surf Shop was the next point of passage in Montalivet, where the day was spent with all the kids from the local surf club. The local surf spot was on the verge of saturation with the six to eight feet swell that was breaking out the back.  In the morning we surfed a nice little reforming right with all the kids and cranked up the BBQ immediately after to feed the starving groms.  All the kids were fed,  followed by a second session on the right later that afternoon.  The day was completed with another autograph signing session and all the groms left the beach with a gift of some sort – a poster, t’shirt, pair  of sandals etc.  The smiles on the faces of all those who had participated in the days events were testimony to a great day enjoyed by all.

International Flavour from the Reef Store Bordeaux

Thursday 16th July
The Reef Store in Bordeaux was our next stop.  Five of the stores lucky customers (including 2 Venezualians, 2 Tahitiens and one Frenchman) were amongst the chosen few to spend the day on the beach with the Reef Free Tour. The Ocean is a fair distance from Bordeaux. Given the swell / winds / tides on the day, it was decided to drive to Soulac, one hundred km’s up the coast, to get the best  surf conditions possible.  Upon arrival, we discovered an insane beach break with light offshore winds fanning three feet hollow peaks and hardly any other surfers out.  We spent three hours in the water surfing together until everybody was exhausted and decided it was time to make the long trip back to Bordeaux.  Before leaving, the fortunate five surfers each received T’s, caps, sandals, board shorts and other gifts as a reminder of their day onboard the Reef Free Tour.

Saturday 18th July
Some friends from  Russia made the long trip down from Moscow to come and check out the Basque Coast.  After a visit of the region including Bayonne, Anglet and Biarritz, they were frothing to try surfing for the first time and the Reef Free Tour took them to Hendaye for their initiation.  There were perfect waves for beginners and under the experienced supervision of Manu Portet,  they all managed to get to their feet and experience the rush of riding their very first wave. After two hours, they were having such a good time, Manu had difficulty to get the surf stoked Russians out of the water!  Tired but happy, another great day enjoyed by all.

Wednesay  22nd July
After a few days break to recharge the batteries, the Reef Free Tour crew rolled into Biarritz.  First stop was More & Less Surf shop, where six  surfers were thrown in the back of the van with Arthur Bourbon and taken directly to Anglet.  Cavailers was the chosen spot with perfect  three to four feet peaks on offer.  The crew wasted no time getting out there and surfed for three straight hours.  Tim Boal was in the water preparing for the next dream tour event and not surprisingly, scored all the best set waves!  After a quick snack at Sable d’Or, gifts were distributed to all before they were dropped back at the shop – tired but stoked none the less after a great days surfing.

The Reef Free Tour is currently still in France for most of this week. The swell charts are looking good for some action in the South West over the next few days, so keep your eyes open and don’t be surprised if you see the van between Guethary and Hossegor all this week.

Next week the Reef Free Tour heads back to the UK, where it will be in Newquay from the 4th – 9th of August for the Relentless Boardmasters in association with Vans. Be sure to come down to the North Fistral carpark and say hello, there will be loads of prizes to be won so don’t miss out.

There is loads of new content recently posted on the event website. Check out the Reef videos “free to experiment” & “free to run with the bulls”,  along with slideshows from all the tour stops over the past month.  There are also plenty of new entries from people hoping  to win the van, with some great videos posted including “Motorbike Surf Trip” and “Story of Freedom.”   You could win the Reef FREE Tour van (Volkswagen California Beach) at the end of this summer  – simply  upload a video showing what being free means to you on our website http://freetour.europe.reef.com and you’ll be in the running to let Reef offer you the chance to be FREE. Reef Free Tour – Pamplona

Posted on July 16th, 2009 in Free Tour | 13 Comments »

Wednesday 15th July,

Last week, the Reef FREE Tour hit Spain in a big way. Starting with the Tablas Surf Shop  from Gijon Asturias, the boys racked up some serious tube time in the North of Spain. After picking up a bunch of groms, the boys scored 4 – 6ft glassy rights  at a beach called Meron. The weather was perfect, the lineup empty and the crew enjoyed their moment of perfect empty solitude…

Later that afternoon they rolled onto Playa de Espana where it was onshore but still some fun peaks to be had. After another session in the water, the BBQ was once again sparked into action by Kepa and all the groms enjoyed talking shop with the Basque legend about their surfing experiences.  With lunch complete and bellies full, the stoked groms each received some Reef goodies before the long drive back to Gijon

Wednesday 8th July – Berria Surf School was the next destination for an autograph session with twenty five local kids from the surf school. They asked all sorts of questions about surfboards, favourite waves, favourite country, best surf trip etc Regrettably the swell was sadly lacking so after Kepa Acero and Manu Portet finished the grueling session, there was only one thing left to do – RUN WITH THE BULLS…

The decision was unanimous, the van was set to auto pilot and in a flash of yellow, the Reef FREE Tour flew off in the direction of San Fermin in Pamplona for the annual Basque Festival. A sea of people dressed in red and white, where seeing is believing. This festival is not for the faint hearted but guaranteed to be one of the wildest and most enjoyable nights of your life.

Manu, Queso and Kepa – red and white and ready to rock!

Manu, Queso and Kepa – red and white and ready to rock!

Regrettably Kepa was not in perfect form (slight bout of gastro), but it couldn’t keep him from enjoying himself none the less.

knock the nail in with one hit and you win a bottle of “vino rojo”

knock the nail in with one hit and you win a bottle of “vino rojo”

The boys were determined to stay up all night to make sure they didn’t miss any action  and rest assured, there was plenty of it to be had.

crazed bull fighter on the loose

There were literally hundreds of thousands of people swarming all over the city. Some were singing, some were dancing, most of them were drinking and a minority over indulging.

Manu, Queso & Kepa – FREE to drink, dance and sing!

Manu, Queso & Kepa – FREE to drink, dance and sing!

It was easy to tell the people who had over indulged as they’re usually doing one of three things – sleeping in the gutter, jumping off the famous tower in the centre of town and praying the crowd below will catch them, or if they make it through the night, they RUN WITH THE BULLS.  Every morning at 8am for the week long festival, tradition has it that a bunch of full grown bulls are let loose at precisely 8am. Anybody mad or drunk enough is permitted to run ahead of the bulls the 3 km distance and end up in the ring “Plaza De Toros”, where the bulls are fought later that day.

late night revelers about to enter the ring

late night revelers about to enter the ring

This is truly a show not to be missed. Once the bulls are all safely in the ring, the fun and games really got underway. Thousands of people remained in the centre of the ring while smaller bulls were let loose to run around and get a little revenge on their unsuspecting victims.  The result was pure carnage and several people were carried off on stretchers, but apparently nobody was seriously injured. All in all, a wild night  – but the boys were happy to crash in the van for three or four hours before heading back to France later that day.

Despite feeling a little worse for wear, the crew all made it back to home safely in one piece. The Reef FREE Tour is currently in France this week so keep an eye out for it if you’re in the South West region and be sure to go say hello if you see the team  on your travels.

Reef Free Tour – Spain

Wednesday 8th July,

Last week on Wednesday 1st July  the Reef FREE Tour headed to the north of Spain for some action, excitement and a solid dose of nostalgia thrown in for good measure. Here’s the story of what went down while they were there.

FREE TO EXPERIMENT…
Enrique Artero is very well known in the Spanish surfing community.  Men’s Spanish Longboard Champ in the 1988, a sales rep for Reef for the past 22 years, there are very few people in Spanish surfing circles who don’t know this guy.  Enrique lives and breathes surfing and has what must be one of the largest surfboard collections in all of Europe.

Enrique & Kepa checking out the quiver

Enrique & Kepa checking out the quiver

There are over two hundred boards in his collection, including singles fins, twins, thrusters etc.  Last Thursday when the Reef FREE Tour dropped in to catch up with Enrique, he had kindly placed all his single fins on the lawn in front of his house.  What a sight !  It was like visiting a surfboard museum.  When asked which board was his favourite, the answer was immediate. “This red Lightning Bolt single fin that Gerry Lopez shaped personally for me, I’ve never even surfed it!”

Manu Portet eyeing off a classic 70’s Stinger Swallow…

Manu Portet eyeing off a classic 70’s Stinger Swallow…

From the house, the boys could see Menakoz, but regrettably not enough swell to be able to borrow a board each and go for a surf.  The rest of the afternoon / evening was spent listening to Enrique talking about the evolution of surfboards  the past 30 – 40 years. He’s surfed all of these boards at least once but admits that with so many boards to choose from it’s rare that he ever surfs the same board two days in a row.

This was truly an amazing day for the Reef FREE Tour and huge thanks to the hospitality of the Artero family for sharing their story with us. Be sure to check out the video clip early next week on the event site capturing the magic of this collection, guaranteed to ignite the flame of nostalgia within anybody who calls themselves a surfer!!!

Life  on the Reef FREE Tour waits for no man and it was into the night and onto the next destination. Thursday morning day began slowly at Los Locos Surf Shop in Torrelavega where the Reef FREE Tour leader for the Spanish leg of the journey, Eduardo “Queso” Quintana, had stopped to pick up five local grommets.

Los Locos Groms @ Liencres, Santander

Los Locos Groms @ Liencres, Santander

Despite the fact that the swell was only a few feet, the groms were all pumped to have the opportunity to surf with Basque surfing legend – Kepa Acero. The crew opted to go directly to Liencres in Santander and wasted no time to make the most of the glassy conditions on offer. All reports indicated Kepa was ripping and clearly impressed the groms.  After a few hours of busting their fins out in the clean little beachbreaks, hunger began to set in  and  Kepa figured it was time to spark up the BBQ. Kepa quickly proved himself to be extremely competent with a bag of charcoal and a pair of tongs and before they knew it, they were all feasting on char grilled hot dogs.  With lunch complete, Queso and Kepa decked the groms out in some new Reef gear before saying their farewells and wishing the boys a great Summer and preparing to recharge their batteries before the next leg of the tour – Pamplona!!!
